What a couple of days at the recent MADVerse Intrigue Summits in Sydney and Melbourne. At a conference dominated by conversations about AI, automation and generative digital marketing , the most powerful idea in the room was surprisingly simple: the future of marketing might be more human, not less.
As a presenter at both events, I had the privilege of hosting two sessions that cut through the digital noise to address what really keeps CMOs up at night:
The Human Premium: Why Experiential is Critical
In a keynote session I jointly delivered with Yakkazoo’s General Manager Rosie Thompson-Jones. We introduced the concept of “The Human Premium.” The marketing landscape has never been more saturated, especially online. Our screens are overflowing. Our attention spans are shrinking. So, how do we break through, create genuine connections, and, most importantly, drive business goals?
The answer is experiential.
The irony of promoting the virtues of experiential marketing to an audience of digital marketers was not lost on me, but I think that is exactly why this session resonated with them – it opened up their understanding of why face to face interactions will become increasingly more important in the AI era.
Return on Emotion: The New Metric for Event and Marketing Success
Following the keynote, I sat down with a brilliant group of marketing leaders for our panel session on “Return on Emotion”. We’ve spent years obsessed with Return on Investment (ROI) and Attribution, but as the digital landscape becomes more saturated, we’re seeing a shift. Brands that win aren’t just the ones with the best algorithms, or the ones who spend the most on paid media and SEO; they are the ones that make people feel something. We discussed how emotional resonance is the only lasting defense against digital indifference.
3 Key Learnings from Intrigue Summit
Beyond the Yakkazoo sessions, the summit provided a wealth of insights. I was genuinely surprised by the rapid pace of change facing digital marketers today. Some highlights for me included:
- AI is the Engine, not the Driver: While many sponsors showcased incredible AI capabilities, the consensus was clear: AI is a tool for efficiency, but strategic direction and brand soul must remain human-led. Use AI to handle the “Mundane” so your team can focus on the “Magic.”
- Optimize for Mentions, Not Just Clicks: With the rise of Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO), the goal of search has shifted from ranking on page one to being the authoritative source that AI engines like Gemini and ChatGPT cite in their answers. Marketers must structure content – using FAQs, clear headers, and fact-dense data—specifically to be “citable” by AI.
- Agencies as Guardians of Authenticity: As AI accelerates content production, the agency-brand relationship is shifting from “delivery” to “discernment.” While brands can use AI to chase trends at lightning speed, the strategic role of the agency is now to act as the guardian of brand equity –ensuring that automation doesn’t lead to a dilution of voice or a loss of genuine human trust.
High Tech vs High Touch
Walking the floor in Sydney and Melbourne, the dominance of AI was undeniable. Almost every sponsor had a story to tell about efficiency, automation, and synthetic intelligence.
But here is my takeaway: In a deep-fake, AI-generated world, the things AI cannot replicate are becoming our most powerful assets.
AI can simulate a conversation, but it can’t simulate the energy in a room. It can generate a face, but it can’t provide a firm handshake or the shared laughter over a coffee. This is why face-to-face experiences—like these summits—matter more than ever.
At Yakkazoo, we believe that as the world goes “High Tech,” brands must double down on “High Touch.” Our sponsorship of Madverse wasn’t just about showing up; it was about proving that experiential marketing and physical connection are the ultimate antidotes to digital fatigue.
Huge thanks to the teams at Salesgasm and everyone who joined our sessions and spoke to us afterwards. It was a couple of days that will stay with me for a long time to come.
